8th UNICA PhD MASTER CLASS

Going beyond knowledge & skills in doctoral education:

How to integrate values and professional attitudes in PhD training?

Hosted by the Centre for Advanced Academic Studies University of Zagreb in Dubrovnik, 27-30 August 2017

organised in cooperation with the PRIDE Network: Association for Professionals in Doctoral Education

Target group:

Vice-Rectors/Heads/Deans of Doctoral Schools/Programmes, doctoral supervisors, academics and senior managers from UNICA member universities and from outside the UNICA Network working in the area of doctoral education

Theme:

As Supervisors or Heads of Doctoral Schools or units, we attach great importance to academic values, in particular research integrity and ethics, and we expect that PhD candidates will share these values. The goal of doctoral education is to support the development of doctoral candidates so that they become responsible, autonomous people, working ethically and with integrity. In this regard, adherence to specific professional values is also an expected outcome of doctoral training.

The recent developments in doctoral education placed emphasis on the knowledge and skills needed to complete a PhD and start a professional career inside or outside the academia, often not giving enough attention to the questions of values and attitudes. Although workshops and training on research integrity have been introduced, providing the PhD candidates with knowledge about definitions, regulations and other topics mainly through lectures and case study work, no lecture or regulation will deeply impact ethical behaviour unless a real adherence to values, such as research integrity or rigour, is present.

This year the UNICA PhD MASTER CLASS will focus on values and attitudes and discuss how to integrate them in the process of doctoral training. The support of development of values and professional attitudes during the “journey” leading to a PhD will be discussed in a global perspective, that is not limited to supervision or training workshops but aiming at considering all the actors and existing opportunities.

Fully in line with the DNA of the UNICA PhD MASTER CLASS, the 3-day workshop will engage the participants and will be based on exchange of experience and on active learning complemented with contributions from experts.

The workshop will provide a dynamic forum for discussion and give the participants an opportunity to identify different ways of instilling values and professional attitudes in doctoral candidates.

UNICA PhD MASTER CLASS ORGANISING COMMITTEEE: Jacques Lanarès (Professor, U. of Lausanne, Chair of UNICA Doctoral Education Group), Melita Kovačević (Professor, U. of Zagreb), Patricia Rosado Pinto (Pro-Rector, U.
