Antifragility in Higher Education: Learning to Thrive Under Uncertainty

Antifragility in Higher Education is a week-long professional development opportunity designed to support staff in understanding and responding constructively to uncertainty, stress, and change in academic environments.

Rather than offering simplistic “resilience tools,” this training explores how systems, teams, and individuals can learn from challenges and make small, practical adjustments that reduce fragility and increase adaptive capacity.

By participating in this staff week, you will engage with practical ideas and activities that help you reflect on daily workplace stressors and discover ways to use them as learning opportunities — without adding extra strain to your workload.

What You Will Gain

Participants will:

  • Explore how uncertainty and pressure shape work in universities and how these effects differ by role and context.
  • Learn frameworks and tools to identify fragility and optionality in everyday academic and administrative processes.
  • Practice simple methods to design small, reversible improvements that help teams and individuals learn from feedback, conflict, and change.
  • Exchange experiences with colleagues from diverse institutional backgrounds in a supportive, collegial environment.

This week is designed to be balanced, engaging, and relevant — enhancing your professional perspective without leaving you more exhausted than when you arrived.

Who Should Join

This staff week is open to academic and professional staff from participating institutions — including those in teaching, management, research support, student services, and administrative roles, with an English proficiency level of B1 or above. No prior experience with complexity or antifragility theory is needed.

Training Format

The programme consists of 25 hours, delivered from Monday to Friday and combines:

  • Interactive workshops
  • Short reflective inputs
  • Peer exchange and group work
  • Practical design exercises

Each day is structured to help you connect insights with your own work context, so you return home with actionable ideas, not abstract concepts. See the preliminary training plan below.

Added Value of This Erasmus+ Staff Mobility

  • Expand your professional toolkit with frameworks that address real work challenges
  • Connect with peers from other institutions and exchange meaningful practices
  • Bring home actionable insights you can apply immediately in your role
  • A reflective, systems-aware approach that complements existing professional development offerings

Upon completion, participants will receive an Erasmus+ Staff Mobility (STT) Certificate.

Erasmus+ Funding

Yes — the training programme is eligible for Erasmus+ Staff Training (STT) mobility grants.

Participants may apply for funding through their home institutions. The organizing team will provide all required documentation, including:

  • Official invitation letter
  • Detailed training programme
  • Certificate of attendance

Programme Fee

The programme fee is 250 euro and it includes:

  • Participation in the full training programme, facilitated by experienced trainers
