Course Description:

The CLIL for Secondary Teachers course is a very practical, hands-on course that gives Secondary Teachers the opportunity to explore how language instruction can be integrated into their classroom practice.

The course looks at the main features that characterise the CLIL methodology and explores different approaches to CLIL, from subject-led ‘hard CLIL’ (where there is a strong focus on subject knowledge), to language-led ‘soft CLIL’ (where curricular topics are taught during a language programme). As a result, the course has broad appeal and is suitable for subject teachers and language teachers who want to know more about this methodology.

Participants examine the role of language in CLIL and are supported in their own language development, with a dual focus on language for teaching and language for learning. Teachers explore language for interaction, language for instruction, cross-curricular academic language, and subject-specific vocabulary.

Teachers look at different ways of guiding their students through target language input, exploring techniques and activities for providing language support to students when reading or listening in English.

Teachers also look at ways to encourage and maximise students’ output through English, considering different types of speaking and writing acts, and understanding the different language supports needed for each type.

The course also considers how to foster the development of thinking skills through English, looking at tasks and techniques teachers can use to engage the higher cognitive skills of their learners.

Finally, participants will look at assessment in CLIL and think about how they might approach formative and summative assessment of their students’ learning, integrating assessment of subject content and language.

Practical ideas for classroom management, teaching strategies, lesson planning, materials development and assessment are looked at on this course.

Participants are encouraged to share their own ideas and experiences, and are given the opportunity to collaborate on tasks to create their own resources and plan a unit of learning, putting the theory into practice.
