WE ARE FULL
Your host:

FAU University Library (UB) organizes a general staff week for librarians for an exchange of best practise.

WE ARE FULLY BOOKED

The University Library Erlangen-Nürnberg  forms the library system of the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and is also the regional library for the administrative district of Middle Franconia. As a scientific universal library, it offers its users a broad spectrum of specialist literature from all faculties and a multitude of services.

The FAU University Library supports and advises on the use of digital resources, methods and tools. Together with the FAU Competence Unit for Research Data and Information, the Research Data Management Unit provides advice at every stage of the life cycle of your digital research data, from initial planning and the application process to the end of the project and long-term archiving. The Open Access Unit supports staff in the publication, long-term archiving and verification of Open Access publications.

FAU was the first university in Germany to adopt an Open Science Policy, in which it commits itself to the central aim of Open Science: to make as many components of the academic teaching and research process as possible transparent, open and reusable. The Open Access Unit provides comprehensive advice. The University Library facilitates the financing of Open Access publications through Open Access funds, memberships and agreements.

On behalf of FAU, the University Library also looks after the Graphic Arts Collection, which, with 2,000 hand drawings from the 14th to 18th centuries from Nuremberg workshops, can compete in artistic value with well-known collections worldwide. The coin collections at the University Library comprise around 28,000 coins and medals from antiquity to modern times and are among the largest university coin collections in Germany.

The library system is a two-tiered library system consisting of four central libraries and 15 sublibraries whose holdings are distributed over a total of approximately 200 locations. The Main Library (HB) and the Science and Technology Branch Library (TNZB) are located in Erlangen, while the Economic and Social Sciences Branch Library (WSZB) and the Educational Sciences Branch Library (EZB) are located in Nürnberg.

Other Info:

Franconia in northern Bavaria comprises no fewer than 15 scenic and holiday region and offers several UNESCO World Heritage sites. Many small Franconian towns have preserved their romantic charm, as if untouched by the passage of time. Within Franconia are the historically important city of Nuremberg, the UNESCO World Heritage town of Bamberg, and a huge range of outdoor activities in the Franconian Switzerland and Franconian lake district.

Erlangen is one of the best preserved baroque cities in Germany and boasts a rich lively history. Currently Erlangen is home to more than 110,000 inhabitants. Erlangen gained its reputation as an open-minded city from the 17th century when Huguenots made it their second home. The international atmosphere persists to date - not least due to Erlangen's position as a centre for medicine and medical technology and the major site of Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) with its almost 40,000 students from both Germany and abroad. Erlangen today is also home to the numerous branch offices of Siemens AG and of course the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light.  With Nuremberg and Fürth, Erlangen belongs to the European Metropolitan Region Nuremberg (EMN), which is home to numerous global players such as adidas, Puma, Schäffler, DATEV and Bosch as well as MAN.  The mixture of new city dwellers and locals of all ages and nationalities ensures that the "savoir-vivre" of the French settlers lives on. As a result, Erlangen today boasts a rich cultural scene with a variety of events for all tastes: live music, art and figure theatre are as much at home here as the poetry festival and the comic salon.  Despite a relatively high number of visitors, it is not widely known by tourists, or those living outside Bavaria.
