International activities by universities are shaped by various external occurrences, most recently the pandemic, climate change, geopolitical conflicts, migration and many more. At the same time, universities are actively establishing international partnerships and collaborations with different international actors.

On one hand, universities are influenced by global events, regional trends and state policies. On the other, they serve as public diplomacy actors and represent their countries and regions abroad.

To better understand this interdependence between university international activities and various external occurrences, the following topics will be addressed:

How do various external factors such as the pandemic, migration, climate change, geopolitical conflicts and so forth affect internationalisation at European universities?

  • What actors shape the higher education landscape in Europe? How do universities collaborate with these actors?
  • How do universities select international partners and projects? How do global and regional occurrences influence ongoing collaborations and new partnership-building?
  • What are the changes in the global flow of students during the recent years?
  • Do universities perform the public diplomacy role? How do they perform this role? What are the challenges?
  • What is the link between the state’s foreign policy and the university’s international activities?
  • How does digitalisation at universities help them address the challenges of our turbulent times?
  • How do European universities connect with their counterparts in other regions of the world?
  • Are there any new forms of internationalisation happening at European universities?

There will also be opportunities for interactive workshops and partnership-building. To encourage networking among participants, the Staff Week will also include social activities and excursions.
