Learning by Doing: Model United Nations

We are delighted to invite you to Freie Universität Berlin’s 14th International Staff Training Week, which will take place from June 22 to June 26, 2026.

This year, FUB offers eleven parallel, interactive tracks, each designed by dedicated units from Freie Universität Berlin's central administration, covering diverse topics tailored to inspire collaboration and knowledge sharing among colleagues from across the globe. Whether you're looking to exchange expertise, develop new skills, engage in peer learning, or expand your professional network, our program provides the perfect platform to connect and grow.

The FUB International Staff Training Week is ideal for higher education staff in these fields, offering a unique opportunity to strengthen partnerships and build connections in an international setting. We warmly welcome participants who are eager to share good practices and actively contribute to the sessions.

Learning by Doing: Model United Nations

Model United Nations (MUN) are authentic simulations of the United Nations. These simulations are interactive and interdisciplinary teaching methods, where the complex structures and areas of operations are presented in a unique way. The participants actively participate in the decision-making process by representing a member state in an organization body, such as the General Assembly or the Security Council. In this manner, they gain experience as ‚diplomats’ and other political actors, obtain knowledge of the history, functioning and working areas of these multilateral organizations, and become aware of different negotiation strategies and conflict solving mechanisms („Learning by doing“).

This MUN-Track will give you valuable insights into the workings of MUN, how to possibly introduce it to your university, and exchange MUN-experiences and best practices. On Thursday and Friday, you will be able to experience a MUN at FU Berlin where students from different faculties will represent the Members of the UN Security Council. We invite educators and administrative staff with an interest in new teaching methods alike.

Dr. Peggy Wittke is organizing Model United Nations events at FU Berlin since 1998, in part in cooperation with the Federal Foreign Office and the United Nations Association of Germany. Since 2004, Model European Union events are also part of the programme. FUB has also been participating in international conferences since 1995, such as the National Model United Nations (New York City), the United Nations International Model United Nations (New York City), and the Harvard Model United Nations (Boston).

If you are interested in participating in one of the tracks, we invite you to fill in the online application form on our website. The deadline for applications is January 26, 2026. The selection will be made on the basis of the information provided in the application form and the results will be emailed to all applicants in early March 2026. Please do not make travel arrangements before your participation is confirmed, as the number of participants per track is limited.

Language:

The language of the Staff Training Week is English, so fluency in English (speaking, listening, reading, writing) is required.
