The goal of this training week is to provide participants with basic knowledge about the syntax and basis of the R programming language and to provide an overview of the main packages which are important for the statistical analysis.

Course Objectives:

* Introduction in using software in statistical analysis

* Working with datasets

* Explore Descriptive statistics and Basic statistical tests with R environment

* Create Data visualization and Data reporting

Expected Outcome:

After this course, participants will be able to develop basic R code and use R packages to perform some of the data analysis and visualization carried out in their research activities, including the management of their datasets.

Target Group:

Teachers and Researchers using statistical methods in research work.

Course Leader:

Nicoleta CARAGEA PhD., Associate Professor at the Faculty of Financial Management, Ecological University of Bucharest and senior expert at the National Institute of Statistics. The teaching activity is focused mainly in the field of statistics, through courses and seminars and master’s degree programs (statistics, economic statistics, social statistics, economic and financial analysis). As a trainer of National Institute of Statistics, she worked with various private clients, like telecom and banking industries, but also with public institutions, into training on the job system, starting from understanding their data and the business itself, identifying their needs for analyzing the data, to building models. Training activities held in National Centre for Training in Statistics from Bucharest: “Data Analysis in Statistics with R”; “The course Introduction to Statistics - Applications in R”; “R Statistical Software – Presenting Advantages of its use for Data Analysis”; “Statistical Analysis – from Theory to Practice”; “Concepts, Models and Techniques for Data Analysis” (http://r-project.ro/training.html).

She participated as a national expert in various projects, workshops and conferences organized by prestigious international institutions with statistics activity (EUROSTAT, OECD, WHO, World Bank, UNICEF-UIS). The results of her research activity have been published in many prestigious journals in Romania and abroad (Romanian Journal of Economics, Romanian Statistical, Economic Computation and Economic Cybernetics Studies and Research) and registered in international databases (ISI Thomson Reuters, RePEc, DOAJ, Index Copernicus and so on).

Day 1

  • Essentials of R;
  • Installation of R and RStudio
  • The R-ecosystem;
  • Data: types and management

Day 2

  • Descriptive statistics with R;
  • Basic statistical tests

Day 3

  • Data Import & Export;
  • Working with large databases: dplyr package

Day 4

  • Working with large databases: data.table package
  • Data visualization with R

Day 5

  • Statistical graphs with ggplot2
  • Data reporting (R markdown; bookdown; shiny)
